Established in 1948, the University of Ghana is the oldest and largest public university in Ghana. Located in Legon, Accra, it is a hub for academic excellence and innovative research in West Africa. The University’s mission is to create a world-class teaching and learning environment that promotes academic freedom, integrity, and the pursuit of knowledge for national and global development.
The University is structured into four main colleges:
College of Humanities – offering programmes in arts, business, law, and social sciences.
College of Basic and Applied Sciences – focusing on physical sciences, engineering, agriculture, and environmental studies.
College of Health Sciences – comprising the medical, dental, pharmacy, and allied health schools.
College of Education – dedicated to teacher education and educational leadership.
The University also hosts several renowned research institutes and centers, the West African Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) , the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER). The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) facilitates impactful research and supports innovation initiatives.
